A quick detour to dog-friendly Olympia

We just made a quick detour here as it was on our way to Seattle and I like how interesting some of the Capitol buildings are. As such, I don't have many recommendations, but if you're just looking to spend a few hours here, or stop for a break on your way through then read on…

THINGS TO DO

We headed straight to the Capitol buildings and surrounding parklands. First we checked out the Tivoli Fountain which sits in the middle of a large park and then headed towards the Winged Victory Monument which was really interesting.

The pretty Tivoli Fountain

Next we made our way around the State Capitol building. I’m a big fan of this type of Architecture and both the front and back of the building were pretty impressive. Opposite the front entrance are some really nice gardens where you can get a great photo with the Capitol in the background.

We then made our way around the side of the building to the huge set of stairs (I'm going to call this the back entrance, though I'm not entirely sure if that's correct) -  and another great photo op. There were also other, impressive looking buildings to walk around in this area, including the Washington Supreme Court which was opposite the steps.

Big steps at the Capitol

You could can also walk around the back of the Supreme Court, which has more grassy areas to explore. If you head left you’ll get a great view out across Capitol Lake and out into the inlet. There was a zig-zag path that you could take to get down to and around the lake (and then further on into town,) but as we had limited time and it was a hot day we didn't do it - but it looked like it would be a good walk.

Lots of grassy spots too!

IN SUMMARY

Olympia is a picture perfect spot to take a break and stretch your legs during a long drive, or for anyone interested in historic Government buildings / architecture. I think we must have visited on a weekend as the place felt deserted, but it felt like we had it to ourselves which was kinda nice!
