A bark-worthy time in Breckenridge

We’re definitely not skiers or hikers and were visiting Colorado in summer, so our stop in Breckenridge came about because we’d heard how pretty it was and I really wanted to experience a mountain village. I’m so glad we did an overnight stay as it meant we got two days to explore this gorgeous little ski town.

THINGS TO DO

Discover Downtown Breck

Breckenridge (or Breck as the locals call it) looks like its come straight from a Christmas movie. A quintessential mountain village, it has a really pretty main street that has a mix of modern and historic buildings. Sitting next to a small river, the town has has an absolutely stunning backdrop of mountains and its a beautiful spot to walk around on a clear night when all the stars are out.

Breckenridge is absolutely stunning at night!

Even though it has a small town feel and is easily walkable, there are over 200 shops and restaurants to explore in Breck, some of which are dog-friendly. You can also walk along the riverfront area which opens up into the town on one side and offers fantastic views of the mountains.

Explore the Outdoor Art

In downtown Breck you’ll find a number of sculptures and pieces of outdoor art, particularly around the Arts District area (which covers around an acre). This area is also home to a number of studios and galleries that you can walk around and explore.

There’s lots of great outdoor art and sculpture in Breck

Ride the BreckConnect Gondola

Unfortunately this wasn’t going when we visited as it was something I really wanted to do… You can catch this free gondola from the centre of town up to Peak 8. There you can explore the base of Peaks 7 and 8, or even explore further up the mountain in the summer months. During the ride you’ll see some amazing scenery and at the top you’ll be rewarded with great views. Dogs are allowed to join you provided they are on leash and stay clear of any wildlife. There’s also a cafe at the top if you’re in need of a snack or refreshments (…such as an afternoon beer in the sun!)

The closest we got to a gondola ride….

EAT AND SLEEP

While there are plenty of places that allow well behaved dogs to join you for a meal or drink on their outdoor patios around Breck and you’ll be able to find something to suit every budget, However if your pet prefers indoors to outdoors, or its a cooler day then head straight to Broken Compass Brewing. This community-based taproom offers original brews, communal tables and games - and best of all, allows good boys and girls inside! To see their ‘Pet Pawlicy’ click here.

While in Breck we stayed at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Breckenridge. The rooms were huge but the pet fee was high (but everywhere in Breck is a little bit more expensive), but the hotel was within easy walking distance to town. To see their pet policy click here.

IN SUMMARY

Breckenridge is a great place to stop over for a night to check out the small town. If you visit in summer you’ll find it easier to explore by foot, less crowds and lower prices. For more information on visiting Breckenridge, including dog-friendly trails further out of town click here.
